Ford Explorer

Specifications

In life, there are watchers and there are doers. Ford Explorer is built for the doers. Never satisfied to view the world from an easy chair, Explorer owners get out there and make life happen. They create their own adventures, challenge themselves with unique goals and then surpass them. Just like Explorer.

Power
Fuel Efficiency.
The fuel economy rating for the Ford Explorer 4.0L is 15.9L/100km (17.9 mpg) in the city and 10.8L/100km (26.3 mpg) for highway driving. The 4.6L Explorer has a rating of 16.7L/100km (17.0 mpg) in the city and 10.9L/100km (26.1 mpg) for highway driving*.

*Canadian gallons used in conversion. Fuel consumption ratings based on Transport Canada approved test methods. Actual fuel consumption may vary depending on driving habits, weather, road conditions and other factors beyond our control.

Towing.
With the Class III/IV Trailer Prep Towing Package now standard on Limited, the Explorer can comfortably tow up to 3227 kg (7115 lb.)* - proof that this is an SUV in more than just name alone.

*When properly equipped. Maximum towing capacity will vary based on passenger and cargo loads and optional equipment installed on the vehicle. See your Ford Dealer for more information.

Engines.
Choose from one of two reliable, efficient and powerful engines found at the heart of each Ford Explorer. The 3-valve V8 - optional on the XLT and Eddie Bauer models, standard on Explorer Limited - offers 292 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. This V8 comes with a First-in-class 6-speed automatic transmission.

The standard 4.0-litre SOHC V6, is mated to a silky 5-speed automatic transmission, providing 210 horsepower and 254 lb.-ft. of torque.

*Truck based mid-sized SUV class.

Comforts

Quiet.
The Ford Explorer continues to be one of the quietest Explorer ever. The Explorer team focused on every aspect of the vehicle – the exterior, interior, chassis and powertrain – to quell noise, vibration and harshness. This enables occupants in the first row, to effortlessly hold a conversation with passengers in the second and third rows even at highway speeds.

Explore in Utmost Comfort.
As you grasp Explorer’s newly redesigned door pull, the substantial steering wheel, or the sporty floor shifter, you’ll feel at ease and in command. The optional new heated windshield can make things even easier by clearing your view in about half the time it takes a conventional forced-air defroster.

Power to Step Up.
Available* power-deployable running boards automatically extend for use when you open a door, and tuck neatly away when it’s closed. So you can get a boost when it’s needed and still maintain plenty of ground clearance..

*optional on Eddie Bauer and Limited arrays.

Choose Your Ride.
Explorer is available in 3 seating configurations. For the 7-passenger model, you’ll need the 2nd row 60/40 split fold seat and the available PowerFold™ 3rd row seat. For a 6-passenger model, combine available quad bucket seating and the PowerFold™ 3rd row seat. Or stick with the standard 5-passenger Explorer which features 1st-row bucket seats and the 2nd-row 60/40 split seat.

Luxury.
The Explorer interior has a level of refinement normally reserved for luxury vehicles. The optional* Navigation System uses DVD-based mapping technologies to guide you to and from your next adventure. The system incorporates handy driver aids, such as intersection programming and spoken upcoming street names.

*Not available on XLT models.

Sound Control.
For your listening pleasure, every Explorer features a new auxiliary audio input jack and an MP3-capable CD player. To help keep your back-seat passengers happily occupied, the optional Rear-Seat DVD Entertainment System gets a larger, 8'' colour LCD screen this year, in addition to its 2 sets of wireless headphones and remote control.

Safety

Adaptive Load-Limiting Retractors.
Adaptive load-limiting retractors are capable of providing multiple levels of restraining force to help tailor the safety belt response to the specific needs of each occupant.

Five Level Front Passenger Sensing System.
A passenger seat sensor identifies the following five stages of occupant classification: empty seat, child presence, small adult presence, medium adult presence and large adult presence.

Standard Safety Canopy™ System.
This system features larger air bags that provide enhanced head protection for first – and second-row passengers in certain side-impact collisions. It also features roll-fold technology that enables the air bag to slip between the window and a passenger’s head.

*Class is mid-sized SUV.

Dual Stage Front Air Bags.
Additional levels of air bag inflation are provided by incorporating a variable time delay between the 1st and 2nd stage output.

Adaptive Air Bag Tethers.
Through deployment of air bag tethers, air bag shape and size is controlled to help improve front passenger occupant interaction.

Adaptive Air Bag Venting.
When activated, this unique safety feature diverts gas away from the air bag, offering occupants less powerful air bags when required.

Safety Comes First.
A stiffer frame. Side intrusion door beams. Front crumple zones. Standard four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. Belt-Minder™ system. The SecuriLock®/Immobilzer Anti-Theft System. Childproof rear door locks and the LATCH system. AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability Control. The Ford Explorer offers safety and security features designed to make you feel more safe and secure.

Front Seat Side Air Bags.
Mounted in the seat, these air bags help protect the torsos and chests of the drivers and front passenger occupants in the event of a side collision.

Advanced Restraints Module and Dual Front-Crash Sensors.
A sophisticated system that uses information gathered from numerous crash sensors to manage and deploy the safety features.

Driver Seat Position Sensor.
Driver seat position is monitored to determine inflator output and steering column energy absorption level.

Adaptive Steering Column.
The steering column design provides two levels of energy absorption by allowing it to “stroke” forward at different levels of resistance.
